EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprogramming (EMDR) is an internationally recognized psychological program used to stimulate information processing systems in the brain through the combination of therapeutic techniques and eye movement. It is built on the premise that when an individual is overwhelmed by a particular event or series of events, their brain cannot process information in the way that it normally would. That distressing moment or series of moments then become(s) "frozen" and may feel just as difficult in remembering it as it/they did when the initial event occurred. With that, the intention with EMDR is to decrease emotional distress and negative beliefs attached to difficult experience. The images, sounds and feelings associated with the event are lessened and/or no longer present when the event is recalled. Likewise, the negative beliefs associated with the event can become more rational and realistic. EMDR does not only work for significant traumatic events or complex PTSD, but repeated or singular acute traumatic experiences as well.
